DUBOIS SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVES 2018-19 CALENDAR

DuBois, PA – It’s not even technically spring yet, but DuBois Area School District is already preparing for the start of the next school year.

Students will start the next school year on Aug. 28, and their last day will be May 30, 2019.

That last day could fall later if students have to make up snow days at the end of next school year.

NEW SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR AT DUBOIS SCHOOL DISTRICT

DuBois, PA – The special education supervisor at the DuBois Area School District will take over as special education director.

Bob Kriner will start his position on March 13 at a salary of $95,521.17.

The previous director, William Ferko II, will be moving on to another position in the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

MAN ALLEGEDLY STOLE MONEY FROM COUPLE’S “PUPPY FUND”

Brockway, PA – A Brockway man is facing burglary charges after he reportedly stole money from another Brockway couple who were trying to save money to buy a puppy.

The charges date back to April of 2016 when the victims told Brockway Police that around $800 in cash was stolen from their “pup fund” box inside their home on Chittester Way. The couple also later found that a Beretta 9mm pistol and about $500 of their roommate’s cash was also taken.

 

CURWENSVILLE RESIDENTS GET CLASSES ON CHRONIC DISEASE HEALTH

Curwensville, PA – Residents from the Park Avenue Towers in Curwensville got a lesson for how to live happier, healthier lives while dealing with chronic diseases.

The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging gave the resident a Chronic Disease Self-Management classes. They completed six, 2 ½ hour weekly sessions discussing healthy eating, physical activity, medication, stress management, communication, problem solving, decision making, and working with their health care professionals.

Participants engaged in interactive sessions that helped them to build confidence in their abilities to manage their health and maintain active fulfilling lives.

 

PENN STATE DUBOIS GETS HIGH-TECH MICROSCOPE

DuBois, PA – Thanks to a gift from a generous donor, Penn State DuBois engineering students and faculty have another way to distinguish themselves as members of an outstanding program.

An all new scanning electronic microscope now housed in the engineering labs is available, meeting a variety of needs, and bringing some research capabilities in line with labs at University Park. The microscope is utilized by faculty as a valuable instructional tool, with which they can train students on equipment they’ll go on to use in their careers. 

 

AMAZON EXPANDING ENGINEERING OFFICE IN PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh, PA – Pittsburgh officials are getting excited as Amazon is set to expand the company’s engineering office in the city. They’re hoping the growing trend continues and Amazon chooses Pittsburgh as the location for its second headquarters… though nothing that been announced yet.

For now, the engineering office expansion will add 125 new job to the Pittsburgh hub. As for the announcement of Amazon’s second headquarters, we’ll just have to wait. Pittsburgh made the top 20 list of possibilities.

 

FIRE DESTROYS HOME BEING RENOVATED IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY

Goshen Township, PA – Fire destroyed a home that was being renovated in Goshen Township, Clearfield County, on Wednesday.

The two-story, wood-frame home was unattended and was being remodeled when it caught fire.

No one was injured.

Firefighters got the call around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The home is owned by 41-year-old Paul Aurandt of Houtzdale.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

 

FREIGHTLINER CATCHES FIRE ON INTERSTATE 80

DuBois, PA – A freightliner caught fire after its tire blew out on Interstate 80 on Thursday, but luckily no one was injured.

55-year-old Bryan Williamson from Brockway was driving around mile marker 90, near the exit for the DuBois Regional Airport, when the front tire blew out around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Williamson pulled over and saw that the freightliner had caught on fire. He couldn’t reach his fire extinguisher before the whole vehicle became engulfed in flames.

 

DUBOIS SCHOOL DISTRICT SHARES MID-YEAR UPDATE

DuBois, PA – Because we’re halfway through the school year, last night’s DuBois School Board meeting showcased some of the great things that are happening.

Oklahoma Elementary principal, Tammy Cook, says they hand out slips to students when they catch them doing something kind for others, then those kids are invited to have Cookies with Mrs. Cook.

DUBOIS HIGH SCHOOL AND CG JOHNSON WILL GET NEW ROOF

DuBois, PA – The DuBois Area Senior High School building and the CG Johnson Elementary building will both get new roofs.

The school board chose to install a Firestone EPDM rubber roofing instead of an asphalt layered roof. Both types of roofs are similar qualities and come with a 30-year-warranty, but the rubber roofing was a couple million dollars less expensive.

Strongland Roofing Systems will install the rubber roofing at the DuBois Senior High School building at a cost of $1,741,560.
