Elwood P. Dowd and Harvey, his imaginary six-and-a-half-foot tall rabbit, are the embarrassment of his family. His sister, Veta, tries to have him committed to a sanitarium but she herself is committed when in a frantic explanation, she admits that she becomes so distressed that she herself sees Harvey from time to time. The truth comes out; Veta is freed and the search for Elwood is on. He eventually arrives at the sanitarium of his own volition, looking for Harvey. But it seems that Elwood and his invisible companion have had a strange influence on the others. Maybe everyone needs a Harvey in their life after all.
Ages listed below are ideal but may be able to work around depending on the actor’s abilities.
Each character supports the story and has their moments to shine. All require the ability to display subtly and not so subtly, their own special peculiarities.
It is recommended that you have some idea of the show for not all the characters are imaginary.

Elwood P. Dowd (30-50) A sweet, mild-mannered yet dignified man who has a dreamy and innocent quality about him.
Ethel Chauvenet (50+): Older, wealthy and influential socialite.
Betty Chumley (40+): Wife of Dr. Chumley and very susceptible to Elwood’s charm.
Dr. William B. Chumley (50+): Confident, a renowned psychiatrist with issues of his own.
Judge Gaffney (50+): Old friend of the family with a soft spot for Elwood’s “delusion”.
Nurse Ruth Kelly (20+): Sincere, sympathetic nurse who hopes Dr. Sanderson will just notice her.
Dr. Lyman Sanderson (25 – 40): A young doctor of psychiatry whose ego and inexperience causes trouble.
Myrtle Mae Simmons (18 – 30)): Pretty, unhappily unmarried and trying to have a normal social life.
Wilson (25 – 50’s): The streetwise orderly, responsible for handling uncooperative patients.
E.J. Lofgren (20’s – 50’s): Cab driver at the end whose wisdom changes Elwood’s fate.
