WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS
April 14 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Did you know that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse by their 18th birthday? That 1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime? That in 8 out of 10 cases, the victim of rape knows his or her perpetrator?
These are alarming statistics that speak to the widespread prevalence of this sort of crime, including in our own communities. PASSAGES, Inc. is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating sexual violence in our area and supporting survivors through their healing process.
Every April, we observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month (#SAAM) as a way of honoring survivors and raising community awareness about this often-misunderstood issue.
You’re invited to the 2018 PASSAGES, Inc. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march to End Gender Violence. During a Walk a Mile march, male community members wear red heels and walk for one mile in solidarity with the victims of sexual violence.
It is a family-friendly event that is lighthearted and lot of fun.
This year, our march will be held in the DuBois City Park on Saturday, April 14. Registration begins at noon at the Edward V Cherry Amphitheatre.
All male walkers will be supplied with red heels in their size and a free t-shirt to thank them for helping support the cause. Women are welcome to walk beside their men and support them (figuratively and possibly literally).
Please consider encouraging your male co-workers, family, and friends to attend this event and walk. It is totally free and a fun way to challenge each other (who can walk the fastest mile in heels? It’s trickier than you think!), all while showing support for survivors and saying “no more” to sexual violence against women, men, and children.
If you’re interested in signing up, please feel free to call any of our offices (814-371-9677, 814-849-5303, 814-226-7273) or send me an email. Walkers can also register the day of the event!
